100% Hemp 6 Ounce Twill by the Yard (59 Inches Wide)
Sturdy and affordable 100% hemp fabric for historical reenactment clothing and accessories, modern apparel, and projects. This 6-ounce hemp twill is strong and lightweight but has a thicker and sturdier feel than you might expect from 6 oz. cotton twill. For reference it feels about perfect for making a twill work shirt or field shirt, ideal for cool-weather and outdoor activities.
This fabric is NOT pre-shrunk. You will need to wash, dry, and press before cutting any patterns, as there is a decent amount of shrinkage the first time it is washed and dried. After that it is very stable with no additional shrinkage evident in our testing and experience. You will lose about 7% of your cut fabric length to shrinkage — but that also means your thickness increases and the weave becomes tighter.
(Fun fact — The lengthwise threads (warp) are pulled under much more tension during the weaving process than the widthwise threads (weft). So, when washing for the first time, these warp threads are finally allowed to go back to the relaxed state where their friends, the weft threads, already are in their happy place. So, all the shrinkage occurs in the warp direction, and there is little or no shrinkage in the weft direction. Cool huh?)
Here's how a 1-yard piece (for example) measures up before and after washing:
6 oz. Twill Colors:
Size before washing: 36 inches x 59 inches (175 GSM)
Size after washing: 33.5 inches x 59 inches (190 GSM)
6 oz. Twill Unbleached Natural:
Size before washing: 36 inches x 62 inches (200 GSM)
Size after washing: 33.5 inches x 62 inches (220 GSM)
(Note that the Unbleached Natural Twill is a heavier fabric.)
